Habilitations

Academically qualified instructors are appointed as privatdozents upon earning their habilitation and are thus granted the authority to teach (venia legendi).

Habilitation Regulations of the Faculties

The relevant habilitation procedures are described in the habilitation regulations of the faculties (in German).

Faculty of Theology
Faculty of Law
Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics
Faculty of Medicine
Vetsuisse Faculty
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Faculty of Science

Upon entry into force of the revised University Statutes on 1 August 2017, a venia legendi is granted permanently. As such, an appointment as a privatdozent is a permanent appointment. This means that UZH has discontinued the earlier practice of periodically assessing whether the requirements for a venia legendi are still met. This decision also applies to privatdozents who were granted a venia legendi prior to the revised University Statutes’ entry into force.

In connection with these changes, the habilitation procedures and the procedure for appointing adjunct professors will also be amended in the future. Currently, framework ordinances are being drafted, which will need to be enacted by the Board of the University. The faculties will be required to observe these framework ordinances and to draft new habilitation regulations as well as ordinances on appointment and re-appointment of adjunct professors. All current habilitation procedures follow the existing habilitation regulations of the faculties, which retain validity until the new habilitation regulations enter into force.
